Introduction to the Liturgy of Saint Hippolytus



The Divine Liturgy is the center of all Christian worship; the most essential and important part of public Christian worship, the Great Sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist does not repeat the Sacrifice of Jesus upon the Holy Cross; rather, it is an offering again and again of the sacrificed Body and Blood which was offered once on the Cross by our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Our Lord's sacrifice on Golgotha and the Eucharistic sacrifice can be distinguished from each other, but they are one single and inseparable Sacrifice. That which distinguishes them is that the Eucharistic sacrifice of the Divine Liturgy is a bloodless sacrifice, done after the Resurrection of Christ, our immortal King. The Eucharist is a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving ("eucharist" means thanksgiving); it is a propitiary sacrifice for all members of the Body of Christ, the Holy Church, for the remembrance of both the living and the dead and for the remission of their sins. The members of the Holy Church are united in the great Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, united in one single Body. The Eucharist is also a sacrifice of entreaty and intercession, in which we ask for peace, for unity, for mercy, for forgiveness, for assistance, for protection, for healing, for the sweet repose of the faithful departed, and all good things.


By the power and grace of God in the Mystery of Holy Communion, when we receive during the Divine Liturgy, we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus, an unshakeable article of our Faith. The Holy Bible teaches us all these things (see, for example, I Corinthians ll:23-30). Anyone who does not believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion is forbidden to receive, for to receive Holy Communion without believing is a sacrilege, as is testified to by the Sacred Scriptures (see, for example, I Corinthians 11:27-29). Also, anyone in a state of grave sin who does not receive Absolution before the Divine Liturgy is forbidden to receive Communion, for to receive in such a state is sacrilegious. Anyone who has not been Baptized may not receive Holy Communion, for It is the communion of the members of the Holy Church, the Body of Christ. On the other hand, the unbaptized are no longer dismissed from the assembly after the Sermon, as was done in the early Church, rather, now they are allowed to stay and witness the Offering of the Sacrifice.


The Holy Mass has two essential parts. After the clergy vest, the liturgy begins with an entrance and reverences, the Sign of the Cross, and a Penitential Rite in which the clergy and the people silently confess their sins and receive Absolution, as called for by chapter 14 of The Didache, which dates from the first century. Hymns may be sung following that rite. The first essential part of the Mass then follows: "The Ministry of the Word"* is a scriptural teaching service. The Divine Liturgy is often called "the Academy of Salvation" and in many parts of the world Holy Mass has been the only way the true Faith could be taught. The second essential part of the Mass follows: "The Offering of the Sacrifice"* is the Eucharistic Sacrifice and the Mystery of Holy Communion; this is the uniquely Christian worship service, instituted at the Last Supper by our Lord Jesus Christ. (* These most ancient names for the two main parts of the Divine Liturgy are recorded in the writings of Tertullian.)


The sanctuary is arranged so that prayers may be said by all (including the Priest) while facing the East in accordance with the most ancient Christian tradition. We take seriously the belief that Liturgy is the work of all the people of God. When a choir sings certain hymns and prayers, the people are encouraged to sing also. The people have an essential part in the divine services and their participation is always needed and desired. It has never been our practice to have the clergy, altar servers, and choir perform the divine services while the people merely look on as spectators. When attending Mass, the people may give their special intentions, before the service begins, to the Deacon or the Priest for commemoration during the service and perhaps for mention during the Prayers of the Faithful. They may use a Diptych form (or any slip of paper) to write down their prayer intentions. When prayer is wanted for certain people, their first names are all that is required; Almighty God knows perfectly well who they are.


When a prayer request is for someone who has died (we say they have reposed or fallen asleep in Christ), put a cross before that person's name (for example: +Alphonse). All the prayer requests collected in a parish are kept in the pastor's book of Diptychs (i.e., Prayer Lists); the people listed therein are commemorated always at all liturgies there.


This Mass Rite was originally celebrated in Greek; later, in Latin; now, in English. It is the most ancient recorded Liturgy, dating from the second century after Christ. St. Hippolytus considered it ancient when he published it circa 215, Anno Domini. It predates the founding of Byzantium. It predates the Latin Mass of Saint Gregory the Great of Rome. Incense was not used in the early centuries in the Old Roman Rite and, therefore, it is optional in all our celebrations. Likewise, bells were not used in the most ancient Old Roman Rite and so now need not be used, but may be used. Liturgical vestments of the most ancient types may be used by the clergy, being the clothes worn during the period when this Mass Rite was in current use in Rome.

AN EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE, IN PREPARATION FOR THE MYSTERY OF ABSOLUTION

First, pray the four preparatory prayers below.


"O most merciful God, I humbly thank Thee for all Thy mercies unto me, and particularly at this time, for Thy forbearance and longsuffering with me, notwithstanding all my many and grievous sins. It is by Thy great mercy that I have not fallen into even more grievous sins than those which I have committed, and that I have not been cut off and cast into hell. O my God, although I have been so ungrateful to Thee in times past, yet now I beseech Thee to accept me, returning to Thee with an earnest desire to repent and to devote myself to Thee, my Lord & my God."

"Receive my confession, and spare me, O most gracious Lord. Rebuke me not in Thine anger, and cast me not away from Thy face, O good Jesus, Who hast said that Thou willest not the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live. Receive me, I beseech Thee, returning to Thee with a penitent and contrite heart. Spare me, O most kind Jesus, Who didst die upon the Cross that Thou mightest save sinners. Have mercy upon me, O most gracious Lord. Grant me, I beseech Thee, perfect contrition for my sins. "O most gracious Virgin Mary, Mother of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, intercede with my Redeemer for me. Obtain for me the full remission of my sins and perfect amendment of life, to the glory of His Name and the salvation of my soul. Amen."

"I implore the same grace through thee, O my Guardian Angel; through you, my holy Patrons, Saint(s) [N... and N...]; through all of you Holy Angels and Saints of God. I beseech you, intercede for me, a sinner, repenting of all my sins, and firmly resolved to confess them and to amend them. Amen."

SINS COMMITTED AGAINST GOD.
Have I omitted my prayers for a long time? Have I prayed negligently, and with willful distractions? Have I prayed outwardly, repeating the words, without any inward prayer? Have I been negligent in the discharge of any of my religious duties? Have I failed to take care that those under my charge have not been deprived of the instructions necessary for their condition in life, nor deprived of time for prayer, nor deprived of time to prepare for the Holy Mysteries? Have I spoken irreverently of God or of holy things? Have I taken His Holy Name in vain, or told untruths? Have I omitted my duty to God through human respect for those who can advance my interests or otherwise aid me? Have I failed to be zealous for God's honor, for justice, virtue and truth, or failed to reprove such as act otherwise? Have I failed to resign my will to God in troubles and anxieties, in necessities, and in afflictions and sicknesses? Have I failed to carefully avoid all kinds of impurity, and failed to faithfully resist thoughts of infidelity, distrust, and presumption?

SINS COMMITTED AGAINST MY NEIGHBOR.
Have I disobeyed my superiors or benefactors, murmured against their commands, or spoken of them contemptuously? Have I been troubled, peevish, or impatient, when told of my faults? Have I failed to correct my faults? Have I scorned the good advice of others, or censured their activities? Have I offended someone by injurious words or actions, or given way to hatred, jealousy, or revenge? Have I lessened someone's reputation by any sort of detraction, or in any matter of importance? Have I formed rash judgments, or spread any report, true or false, that exposed my neighbor to contempt, or that made him or her undervalued? Have I, by carrying tales, or otherwise, created discord and misunderstanding between neighbors? Have I been stubborn, contrary or peevish towards someone, whether in my behaviour, speech, or conversation? Have I taken pleasure in vexing, mortifying, or provoking anyone? Have I mocked or reproached anyone for their bodily or spiritual imperfections? Have I been excessive in chastising those under my care, or have I been lacking in giving them just reproof? Have I failed to bear with others' oversights and imperfections, and failed to give them good counsel? Have I failed to be solicitous for such as are under my charge; and failed to provide for their souls and bodies?

SINS COMMITTED AGAINST MYSELF.
Have I been obstinate in following my own will, or in defending my own opinion in things either indifferent, dangerous, or scandalous? Have I taken pleasure in hearing myself praised, or acted from motives of vanity or human respect? Have I indulged myself in too much ease and sloth and gluttony, or in any way yielded to sensuality or impurity? Has my conversation been edifying and moderate; or have I been stubborn, contrary, proud, or troublesome to others? Have I spent too much time in recreation or useless employments and thereby omitted or put off my devotions to unseasonable times? Have I yielded to intemperance, rage, impatience, or jealousy?

SOME CONSIDERATIONS TO LEAD YOU INTO TRUE CONTRITION.
Place before yourself, as distinctly as you can, all the sins which you are going to confess. Consider Who God is, and how good and gracious He has been to you, although you have so often and so much offended Him by these sins. He made you; He made you for Himself, to know, love, and serve Him, and to be happy with Him for ever. He redeemed you by His Blood. He has borne with you and waited for you for so long. He has called you and moved you to repentance. Why have you sinned so much against Him? Why have you been so ungrateful? What more could He have done for you? Oh, be ashamed, and mourn, and hate your sins, because you have sinned against your Maker and your Redeemer, Whom you ought to have loved above all things.

Consider the full consequences of even one grave sin: By it you lose the grace of God; you destroy peace of conscience; you forfeit the felicity of heaven, for which you were created and redeemed; and you prepare for yourself eternal punishment. If we grieve for the loss of temporal and earthly things, how much more must we grieve for those which are eternal and heavenly? If we grieve at the departure of a soul from the body, how much more must we grieve at the death of a soul, which is the loss of the presence and of the grace of God! "What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" and "who can dwell with everlasting burnings?" "Who can endure to be cast out from the presence of God for ever?" Consider how great has been, and is, the love of God for you, if only from this, that He has waited so long for you, and that He has spared you, when He might have so justly cast you into hell. Look upon Jesus fastened to the Cross for love of you! Behold Him, pouring forth His precious Blood to be a fountain to cleanse you from your sins! Hear Him saying: "I thirst," as it were, with an ardent desire for your salvation. Behold Him stretching out His arms to embrace you, and expecting you, until you should come to yourself and turn to Him, and say: "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before Thee, and am no more worthy to be called Thy son." Let the consideration of these things touch your heart with love for Him, Who has so loved you; and love will beget true contrition, most acceptable to God.


Proskomide
the Preparation of the Holy Gifts


Before the Divine Liturgy begins, the clergy go to the Credence Table to the right (south) of the Altar. They face the Credence and prepare the Holy Gifts for the Divine Liturgy.
The Chalice, Paten, Pall, Veil, Purificator, Burse, Corporal, Wine and Water Cruets, Prosfora Bread for the Sacrifice, and all else necessary for the preparation of the Holy Gifts are already placed on the Credence Table before service begins.

PRIEST: In the Name of the Father, and of + the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

PEOPLE: Amen.


PRIEST: Precede, O Lord, we beseech The, our actions by Thine inspiration, and follow them with Thy help; thatt all our prayer and work may be always begun by Thee and likewise by Thee be ended; through Christ our Lord.

PEOPLE: Amen.


PRIEST: Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, bread of eternal life, vouchsafe to bless + [this bread/these breads] as Thou didst bless the five loaves in the wilderness; that all who partake of them may receive health of soul and body; Who livest and reignest unto ages of ages.

PEOPLE: Amen.


PRIEST: Be + blessed by Him from Whose side there came forth blood and water; in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.


All the clergy go to the Ambo and face the Altar, which they reverence.
They exit the chancel from the north side, for the Entrance and the Divine Liturgy.





Asperges

The Rite of Sprinkling with Holy Water

The Priest may sprinkle the congregation with Holy Water at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy. While the Priest walks down the aisles sprinkling the congregation, the Choir sings or says:

Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, O Lord and I shall be clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, unto ages of ages. Amen.

Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, O Lord and I shall be clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

The Priest returns to the foot of the Altar and says:

STANDING: All who are able must stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel and throughout the Anaphora (the Eucharistic Prayer); otherwise, it is permissible to be seated. Of course, it is permissible to stand throughout the entire Divine Liturgy. The Sanctuary bell may be rung to announce the Entrance of the clergy.

ENTRANCE: The Priest, carrying the Holy Bible or Book of Gospels and preceded by Altar servers and other ministers, goes to the Ambo. Each person makes a reverence (profound, if the Holy Eucharist is reserved) and then goes to the Altar. The Priest kisses the Book and then blesses the Altar (making the Sign of the Cross with the Book over it); he places the Book on the Altar and kisses the Altar table (altarstone or antimension), saying the following prayer.

PRIEST: Blessed [+] is the Kingdom of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

INCENSE -- The use of Incense at the Entrance, Gospel, and Offertory is optional in all Divine Liturgies.

ASPERGES -- The Rite of Asperges is optional in all Divine Liturgies.

PRAYERS AT THE AMBO -- The Priest faces the people for the Sign of the Cross, the Penitential Rite, the Hymns, the Ministry of the Word, the Sermon, the Creed, the Prayers of the Faithful, and the Kiss of Peace. He stands on the Ambo.

PRIEST: In the Name of the Father, and of + the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

PEOPLE: [+] Amen.

THE PENITENTIAL RITE All should examine their consciences, silently confess their sins to God, and make firm intentions to repent and sin no more. The confession and absolution of our sins is the proper preparation before we approach the Holy Mysteries of the Altar, and the absolution is completed when we receive our Lord Jesus Christ in the Mystery of Holy Communion.

PRIEST: Dearly beloved, let us call to mind our sins and transgressions, and ask Almighty God to forgive us, so that we may enter with pure hearts into the Holy of Holies.

After a brief time for examination of consciences and reflection, the Priest pronounces the Absolution.

PRIEST: Let us pray. Take from us our sins and transgressions, O Lord, that we may enter with pure minds into the Holy of Holies. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SPECIAL RITES

Saint Blaise Day Blessing of Throats

Do this on the Feast of St. Blaise - February 3rd/16th. Use candles blessed on Candlemas, that is, on the day before. Do not light the candles, as that could cause serious injuries. Continue to wear your eucharistic vestments. To the Ambo, after Mass but before the Recession, take two blessed candles tied together in the form of a Cross. Hold the candles against the throat of each person to be blessed. Say the following prayer, then bless the person with your hand.

PRIEST: Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may Almighty God deliver you from all disease of the throat, and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.


ASH WEDNESDAY Blessing and Imposition of Ashes

The ashes are prepared by burning the palms (and pussywillows, in accordance with the Slavonic tradition) from last year's Palm Sunday. Using a mortar and pestle, the ashes are ground to a very fine texture. Ashes remaining from a previous year may be mixed with the new ashes. Before the Penitential Rite of the Mass begins, the ashes are blessed and distributed to the clergy and the people.

(Psalm 69 (KJV) [Ps. 68 D-R]):
Hear us, O Lord, for Thy mercy is kind; look upon us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies.

Save me, O God: for the waters are come in even unto my soul.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Hear us, O Lord, for Thy mercy is kind; look upon us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies.

The ashes are blessed at the Ambo, by the celebrant using the following prayers. The + indicates where he blesses with his hand.

ASPERGES. Sprinkling the ashes thrice with holy water, the Priest prays:

[P] Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, O Lord, and I shall be cleansed; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

CENSE The Priest then censes the ashes thrice. After censing the ashes, the Priest kneels before the Altar and applies the ashes on his own forehead, with his right thumb, in the form of a Cross, saying:

[P] Remember + man that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return.

The Priest goes to the Ambo & distributes the blessed ashes to all who come forward, marking with his thumb on the forehead of each person the Sign of the Cross with the ashes and saying to each person, as he does so:

CHOIR. The choir, meanwhile, may sing these Anthems:

Let us change our dress for ashes and sackcloth: let us fast and weep before the Lord: for our God is very merciful to forgive us our sins. The priests, the ministers of the Lord, shall weep between the porch and the altar, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare Thy people; and shut not the mouths of them that sing to Thee, O Lord. Let us make amends for the sins we have committed through ignorance: lest, suddenly overtaken by the day of our death, we seek for time to do penance, and not be able to find it.

Rite of Blessing

If Holy Communion will be distributed, omit this Pro-Communion Rite and go on to the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts. Otherwise, here bread and drink (wine, water, or any other drink) may be blessed by the Cleric or other leader of the Pro-Liturgy (this blessed bread and drink are not the Holy Eucharist). The first prayer is said over a loaf of bread (any type) and the bread is then broken. The second prayer is said over the drink. THE MEANING OF THE PRO-LITURGY

The Pro-Liturgy (the name means "substituting for the Divine Liturgy") is a divine service of the Church which all persons may celebrate. When a Priest is not available or cannot celebrate Divine Liturgy - the Holy Mass - for any reason, any clergy or lay person may celebrate Pro-Liturgy. Christians are obligated to worship the Lord on Sundays and other major holy days. If impossible to attend Mass on such a day of obligation, anyone may fulfill his or her obligation by celebrating this Pro-Liturgy, alone or together with others. Such celebrations may take place on other occasions whenever people wish to worship alone or together. One who is celebrating alone reads the service straight through. The Pro-Liturgy is provided so that all the faithful may have the grace and consolation of the divine services of the Church, without regard to how isolated he or she may be. By regular participation in the divine services, one is transformed, made different, and made holy in the eyes of God Almighty.

RUBRICS FOR THE CELEBRATION OF PRO-LITURGY

Any tonsured minor or major clergy, can celebrate Pro-Liturgy; the rubric CLERIC may refer to such. In fact, celebration by lay persons, whenever a cleric is not available, is perfectly acceptable and highly encouraged. The rubric CLERIC refers to any person leading the service and the rubric PEOPLE refers to the rest of the congregation; the rubric ALL refers to the entire congregation, including the leader. Any person can fulfill the role of READER in the Service of Readings. Any leader of a Pro-Liturgy may bless bread and drink in the Rite of Blessing; but only an authorized person may distribute Holy Communion. Pro-Liturgy can be celebrated in any place, from a cave to a cathedral, in the field or indoors. It is expected that it usually will be celebrated in chapels and barracks, field infirmaries, private homes, nursing homes, jails, schools, and similar places, more than churches; but all places where reason dictates that one may pray openly are permissible. If a church is used, the altar may be used, especially for the Communion Rite, but no altar is needed absolutely. The service could be celebrated in a tiny room with a few people standing in a circle. In the field and in institutions, informal settings are usually the rule, rather than the exception. If possible & convenient, a table with a white cloth may be set up with a Cross and two candles, for use as a minimum altar; but a consecrated altar or antimension is never required. In all medical facilities and anywhere else where there may be any danger of igniting any oxygen, gas, ammunition, or fuel of any kind, never light a candle or a censer without establishing positively that it is safe to do so.

This service is to be celebrated reverently and joyfully. An ordained cleric in major orders should wear his proper Stole; full eucharistic vestments are not required. Since an altar is not required for this service, the leader and congregation may be disposed around the room in any manner conducive to worship and fellowship. There are no rubrics for STAND or SIT; in many situtations, it will not be reasonable to try to require standing (e.g., in field infirmaries and in nursing homes, many cannot stand). In general, those who are able should stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel and during the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts Holy Communion Rite. At the Peace, everyone present should be allowed to exchange signs of peace, according to local customs - be flexible. Rubrics are very few in this service - this is intentional; act reverently and appropriately, taking the situation and the people present into account fully. Use common sense and prudence: these are rubrics enough for almost everything. Adding in such things as processions before and after the service, lining up to receive Communion: these things are up to the leader - there are no strict rules about them. Incense is always optional. There are many places where hymns may be included; a rubric even provides that a hymn may be included between each Reading in the Service of Readings; use of hymns is up to the leader and to the congregation.

Specific Rubrics -- THE OPENING PRAYERS - The leader blesses himself or herself with the Sign of the Cross, indicated by [+] , as he or she says the Sign of the Cross prayer. The people bless themselves at each [+] indication in the people's responses. SERVICE OF READINGS - Optional Readings are provided; others could be used alternatively, of course. Particular Psalms are included in the Pro-Liturgy, but feel free to substitute other Psalms and Readings. The Reader may read none, one, several, or all of the Readings; however, an Epistle and a Gospel should always be included. The 23rd Psalm should always be included in a Requiem Pro-Liturgy service. When a cleric is present, he should read the Gospel; anyone may be deputed to be the Reader(s) of the other Readings. The Readings may be followed by a sermon, followed by announcements, followed by a hymn. All three are optional. Discretion should be exercised by the leader as to preaching, announcements, and the hymn.

SERVICE OF PRAYER - Everyone should pray the Apostles' Creed together. Then the leader should pray the petitions of the Litany (say or sing them) and the congregation should pray the responses (say or sing them). See REQUIEMS, below, regarding petitions for the dead. In a final petition(s), any and all specific prayer intentions of the congregation may be explicitly mentioned. At The Peace, everyone present, including the leader, should be allowed to exchange signs of peace, according to local customs. The Sanctus-Benedictus and the Lord's Prayer may be said or sung.

RITE OF BLESSING - This Pro-Communion rite is a substitute for the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts distribution of Communion where such distribution is not possible. If Holy Communion will be distributed, omit this Rite of Blessing and go on instead to the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts. However, if there is not to be any distribution of Communion, then, at this point in the Pro- Liturgy, bread and drink (the drink may be wine or water or any other drink) may be blessed by the Cleric or by any other leader of the Pro-Liturgy. The Sign of the Cross + is made only by a Priest or Bishop; other leaders simply hold their hands, palms down, first over the bread, then the drink, as they pray the blessing prayers. It is essential to recognize that this blessed bread and drink are not the Holy Eucharist; they are not Eulogia; they are blessed food and drink, just as all Christians bless their meals before they eat. The inherently sacramental nature of the communal meal and of bread itself makes this rite a beautiful Christian symbol that is truly sacramental in essence, even though anyone, clergy or lay person, may do it. The prayers of the rite are from the ancient Didache, dating to the first century. The first prayer is said over a loaf of bread (any type of bread, even fancy loaves, will do) and the bread is then broken into pieces according to the number of people present. The second prayer is said over the drink (which may be in a single flask, etc., or in separate containers). All then may partake of the bread and the drink. If necessary, this Rite of Blessing may be celebrated at the beginning of a meal following soon after the Pro-Liturgy. This rite is not Holy Communion; rather, it is a substitute for Holy Communion - so it properly is called the Pro-Communion.

DIVINE LITURGY OF PRE-SANCTIFIED GIFTS - HOLY COMMUNION RITE - A Pro-Liturgy in which Communion is distributed is called the "Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts," which is always celebrated on Good Friday instead of a Mass. The Communion rite is optional, never required. Only a deacon, priest, or bishop, or a person who has been authorized as a Eucharistic minister, may distribute Holy Communion. If such a person is not present, or if Communion is not distributed for any other reason, omit the Communion rite and go to the CLOSING PRAYERS. If the Communion rite is celebrated, the people bow their heads during the first prayer: "Bow down...", after which the Eucharistic minister holds up the Holy Gifts in the sight of the people. The Eucharistic minister then distributes the Holy Communion to the people, either the Hosts alone, or under both Species. He says: "The Body of Christ, the Bread of Heaven" (and, if both Species are distributed, he also says "The Blood of Christ, the Cup of Salvation") to which the communicants each respond: "Amen." A Communion hymn may be sung while the Holy Gifts are being distributed, and while the Eucharistic minister replaces the remaining Holy Gifts in the ciborium, or pyx and burse, and performs ablutions (of his fingers and the paten/ciborium/pyx/chalice, as may be necessary, appropriate, and possible under the circumstances). Where an altar is being used, a white corporal may be spread out on it and the Holy Gifts placed thereon before and after the Communion rite; in which case, at least one candle should be lit (except where lighting a candle is contraindicated, such as in a medical facility where the presence of oxygen and other flammables causes a danger).

THE CLOSING PRAYERS - After the leader reads Psalm 34, the leader dismisses the congregation. The dismissal is different for a leader who is a Priest or Bishop: he gives a final blessing + and the congregation bless themselves [+] with the Sign of the Cross. The service is ended and a final hymn or hymns may be sung.

REQUIEMS -- Requiem Pro-Liturgy is celebrated with reference to one or more of the dearly departed. Where the appropriate clergy cannot serve a Requiem Mass, then a Requiem Pro-Liturgy, at least, should be celebrated on the occasion of the death of one of the faithful. The rubrics for a Requiem Pro-Liturgy are simple: always read Psalm 23, and name the dead person(s) in the Litany's Requiem Petitions (unless the service is a general Requiem and there are too many names to mention). One or more hymns appropriate to a service for the dead may be included in the Requiem Pro-Liturgy. Otherwise, simply act appropriately, as you would at any Requiem Mass. In a service for a departed individual, the presence of the deceased's coffin in the place of worship, with four candles around the coffin (at the head, at the foot, and one on each side), and with censing of the coffin (which is done by the leader, after the Litany and before The Kiss of Peace [at which same time a Memorial Service may be celebrated by a deacon or priest]), is permissible if the Requiem Pro-Liturgy is being celebrated in lieu of a Requiem Mass.

SPECIAL RITES AND PRAYERS

Include here any special rites or prayers appropriate to the purpose of the Molieben; e.g., for the blessing of a house, prayers for the success of an undertaking, etc. Use standard rites, as appropriate, but do not repeat any portions of them already done in the Service. In every Service of Thanksgiving, pray the following Te Deum.

The End of the Molieben

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MOLIEBEN
THE SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING

A Molieben is a service of prayer with a purpose. It is said to the Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ the King, either in thanks for blessings already received, or in conjunction with prayers for some future blessing and in anticipation and hope of receiving them from the Lord. A Service of Thanksgiving can be for many different purposes: prayers and petitions for any need; for all thanksgivings; for victory in battle; for anniversaries and other occasions; for births; for blessing a house; for beginning construction of a place of worship, a home, a place of business, etc.; for safety and protection; for the beginning of important undertakings, and after their completion; and so forth. Where there is a special rite or prayer for a particular purpose (for example, the rite for blessing a house), it is included immediately after the Litany.

A Molieben is normally celebrated by a Priest or Bishop, and it may be celebrated by a Deacon when necessary. The rubrics are somewhat different when a Deacon celebrates. There are separate parts for both a Priest and a Deacon. If there is no Deacon, the Priest says both parts. If there is no Priest, the Deacon says both parts; the Final Blessing is different for a Deacon celebrant.

The clergy may vest in just their proper Stoles, or in full eucharistic vestments. Normally, all people present and able stand throughout. A Molieben should be celebrated with a minimum Altar, viz., a table with one white cloth covering it, with a Cross in the center and with two lights. In a home or other private place, a table, desk, etc., may be used. In a place of worship, the main Altar may be used, or a table may be set up at the Ambo. Neither a Corporal nor an Antimension is used on the Altar in a Molieben.







BENEDICTION SERVICE

The celebrant, now vested in the cope, bows profoundly before the Altar and removes the Holy Eucharist from the Tabernacle, then exposes the Holy Eucharist on the Altar in a ciborium or monstrance.



During the exposition the choir or congregation sing:

The celebrant and the other ministers in the Sanctuary, and the congregation at their places, kneel in adoration of Christ our God. The Choir may sing a Litany, Hymn, Psalm or Te Deum.

Then the Choir and/or congregation sing the "Tantum Ergo" during which the celebrant may cense the Holy Eucharist.

Again kneeling in the sanctuary, the Priest prays:

(P) Let us pray. O God, Who, in this wonderful Sacrament, hast left us a perpetual memorial of Thy Passion; Grant us, we beseech thee, so to venerate the Sacred Mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, as to be always sensible in our souls of the redemption Thou hast purchased for us. Who livest and reignest, God unto all ages of ages. Amen.

The celebrant rises, vests with the Humeral Veil so that his shoulders, arms and hands are covered, and takes up the ciborium (or monstrance/ostensoruim). The celebrant turns and gives the Benediction, that is , he blesses the ministers and the congregation with the Holy Eucharist, in the form of a Cross. There is most profound silence and solemnity during the Benediction. After the Benediction, the celebrant turns and replaces the Holy Eucharist on the Altar; then he bows profoundly. He divests himself of the Humeral Veil; then he returns to kneel in the Sanctuary, and to lead the ministers and the congregation in the Divine Praises.

After the Divine Praises, the ministers and the congregation rise to their feet. The celebrant puts the Holy Eucharist away in the Tabernacle. If the Divine Liturgy was in progress and was stopped for the Benediction service, it is now completed, beginning with the Dismissal; the celebrant may continue to wear the Cope for the remainder of the Divine Liturgy. If the service takes place outside the Divine Liturgy, there may be further devotions, prayers, etc., at the celebrant's discretion.

LITANY OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST
The Litany of the Holy Eucharist is appropriate whenever devotion to our Lord, God, Redeemer, and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Eucharist is a focus of divine service or prayer.

A reminder: Since we are Orthodox and do not kneel on Sundays this Service of Benediction must not take place on the Lord's day. It may be celebrated at other times however. Again, It must never be done without proper vestments, preparation and solmenity.
